We seek a grant for the creation of MiRa, an internet database for mixed race themes and representations in American films made in 2012 and 2013, with the aim that it will expand to cover the history of American cinema once implemented. The database will not only serve as a helpful list for scholars of mixed race studies, but will include a tagging system making it possible for users to explore how mixed race characters are discussed, framed, addressed, and so on. The project will entail a large-scale transcription and script acquisition process in order to provide a body of data sets accessible to database users for their own research. Once the database is established with a running algorithm that proves fully functional, the site will move into a crowdsourced mode in which users can upload scripts/transcriptions and appropriately tag data sets. In doing this, the database not only can continue on indefinitely as more films are made, but can be expanded to include cinema of the past, independent film, and even international cinema.

Welcome
